Description of Calcium Metal

Silvery white soft metal with metallic luster.

Melting point: 842°C, molecular formula: Ca, density: 1.55g/cm3 (relative density water = 1).

Stability: Unstable, Class 4.3 hazardous chemicals.

Main application: used for alloying with aluminum, copper and lead, also used as reducing agent for glass making, often used as alloy deoxidizer/desulfurizer.

Properties of Calcium Metal

The relative density is 1.54. Melting point (839±2)°C. The boiling point is 1484°C. Soluble in acid and liquid ammonia, slightly soluble in alcohol, insoluble in benzene. The more pure it is, the slower its surface will darken in the air. In the air, it will generate calcium oxide and calcium nitride when it encounters strong heat combustion. Calcium hydride is slowly formed by reacting with hydrogen above 400°C. Gently react with water at room temperature to form a calcium hydroxide protective film, and react violently with water to release hydrogen when heated. The chemical properties are very active, with strong reducing ability, easy to combine with halogen, sulfur, nitrogen, etc., and can reduce almost all metal oxides when heated.

Application of Calcium Metal

In the iron and steel industry, the main use of calcium metal is to process calcium metal grains and then make calcium iron wire or pure calcium wire.

For refining of steel outside the furnace. Its function is to desulfurize and dehydrate, to promote the rapid rise of impurities in molten steel, and is generally used to produce high-quality steel.

Anhydrous alcohol is made using pure calcium metal as a dehydrating agent.

Used as a desulfurizer in the petroleum industry.

Industrial Production Method of Calcium Metal

1: Burn the commonly known as white marble (CACO3) into lime (CA0);

2: Quickly mix lime (CA0) and aluminum powder (AL), and press it into a flat ball with a length of about 4cm with a ball press;

3: Put the flat ball into a 1200-degree high-temperature reduction tank, and then vacuumize;

4: Aluminum powder and lime react under high temperature conditions to generate alumina and metal calcium vapor;

5: Metal calcium vapor condenses in the water cooling section of the reduction tank to form metal calcium crystals;

6: Metal calcium crystals can be processed into required metal calcium products, such as metal calcium particles, metal calcium powder, etc.

Process of Calcium Metal

The preparation of calcium mainly includes the reduction method, the electrolysis method, and calcium refining. Due to the strong activity of metallic calcium, it was mainly produced by electrolysis of molten calcium chloride or calcium hydroxide in the past. In recent years, the reduction method has gradually become the main method for producing metallic calcium.

1. Reduction method

The reduction method is to use metal aluminum to reduce lime under vacuum and high temperature, and then obtain calcium through rectification.

The reduction method usually uses limestone as the raw material, burns calcium oxide, uses aluminum powder as the reducing agent, mixes the pulverized calcium oxide and aluminum powder in a certain proportion, presses them into blocks, and puts them under 0.01 vacuum and 1050-1200°C temperature. The reaction produces calcium vapor and calcium aluminate. The reduced calcium vapor crystallizes at 750-400°C. The crystalline calcium is then melted and cast under the protection of argon to obtain dense calcium ingots.

2. Electrolysis

The earlier electrolysis was the contact method, which was later improved to liquid cathode electrolysis. The disadvantages of the contact method to produce calcium are the large consumption of raw materials, the high solubility of metallic calcium in the electrolyte, low current efficiency, and poor product quality.

The liquid cathode method uses a copper-calcium alloy (10%-15% calcium) as the liquid cathode and a graphite electrode as the anode. The electrolytic calcium is deposited on the cathode. The electrolyzer shell is made of cast iron. The electrolyte is a mixture of CaCl2 and KCI. Copper is selected as the alloy composition of the liquid cathode because there is a very wide range of low melting point regions in the copper-calcium phase diagram in the high-calcium content region, and copper-calcium containing 60%-65% calcium can be produced below 700°C alloy. The copper-calcium alloy produced by electrolysis can be distilled to obtain metallic calcium.

3. Calcium refining

High-purity calcium can be obtained from industrial calcium after high-vacuum evaporation treatment. Generally, the distillation temperature is controlled at 780-820°C, and the vacuum degree is 1×10-4. Distillation treatment is less effective in purifying chloride in calcium. Nitride can be added when the distillation temperature is lower than the distillation temperature to form a double salt in the form of CanCloNp. This kind of double salt has a small vapor pressure, is not volatile, and remains in the distillation residue. Through the addition of nitrides and vacuum distillation purification, the sum of impurities in calcium such as chlorine, manganese, copper, iron, silicon, aluminum, and nickel can be reduced to 1000-100ppm, and high-purity calcium of 99.9%-99.99% can be obtained. Then extruded or rolled into rods and plates, or cut into small pieces, and packed in airtight containers.
