Both calcium and aluminum have a strong affinity with oxygen. Calcium, in particular, is a very active metal and a powerful reducing agent. It has a strong affinity not only with oxygen but also with sulfur and nitrogen. Aluminum is a traditional deoxidizer used in steelmaking, due to its strong affinity with O and the complete mutual solubility between Al and Fe. This also determines that the status of Al as an essential component in steelmaking deoxidation will be difficult to change for a long time. However, Al added to steel can easily form high melting point deoxidation products, which can worsen the molten steel’s fluidity and seriously affect the castability of the molten steel, thus posing a threat to the smooth operation of continuous casting production.
